How Much Does Pine Fencing Cost on the Gold Coast?
By Bryce Roadley
What Does a Pine Fence Actually Cost?
If you are planning a new fence on the Gold Coast, cost is probably the first question on your mind. The short answer: pine fencing typically ranges from $75 to $150 per lineal metre installed. But that range is wide for a reason. The style of fence, the terrain, the height, and the amount of preparation work all affect the final price.
This guide breaks down pine fencing costs on the Gold Coast so you can budget with confidence before requesting a quote.
Pine Fencing Styles and Their Price Ranges
Standard Paling Fence
A standard paling fence is the most affordable option. It uses vertical timber palings fixed to horizontal rails between posts. You will see this style on most residential boundaries across the Gold Coast.
Typical cost: $75 to $100 per lineal metre (installed)
This price assumes:
- 1.8 metre height (standard boundary height)
- Flat or gently sloping ground
- No old fence removal required
- Standard H4 treated pine posts set in concrete
Paling fences are a practical choice when you need privacy and boundary definition without stretching the budget.
Lapped and Capped Fence
A lapped and capped fence is a step up in both appearance and durability. The palings overlap each other and sit between capping rails at the top and bottom, creating a cleaner, more finished look.
Typical cost: $100 to $130 per lineal metre (installed)
The higher price reflects the extra timber and labour involved. Lapped and capped fences last longer because the capping protects the end grain of the palings from moisture, which is important in the Gold Coast’s humid subtropical climate.
Good Neighbour Fence
A good neighbour fence looks the same from both sides. There is no “ugly side” facing your neighbour. This style uses a central rail with palings fixed alternately on each side.
Typical cost: $110 to $150 per lineal metre (installed)
Good neighbour fences use more timber than standard paling fences, which accounts for the higher price. They are increasingly popular on the Gold Coast because they avoid disputes about which side faces which way.
What Affects the Final Price?
The per-metre rates above are a starting point. Several factors can push the cost up or down.
Old Fence Removal
If your existing fence needs to come down first, expect an additional $15 to $30 per lineal metre for removal and disposal. Asbestos fencing requires specialist removal and costs significantly more.
Terrain and Access
A flat, accessible block is the easiest scenario. Steep slopes, retaining walls, narrow side access, or properties where materials need to be carried by hand all add to the labour cost. On hilly Gold Coast blocks in areas like Mudgeeraba or Tallai, stepped fencing may be necessary, which increases both materials and time.
Post Depth and Spacing
In standard conditions, posts are set 2.4 metres apart in 600mm-deep concrete footings. If your soil is sandy (common near the coast) or you are in a high wind area, deeper footings or closer post spacing may be required. This adds cost but protects your investment.
Height
Standard boundary fences are 1.8 metres. If you need a taller fence for extra privacy, each additional 300mm of height adds roughly $10 to $20 per lineal metre.
Gates
A standard pedestrian gate costs between $250 and $450, depending on the style and hardware. Double gates for vehicle access range from $500 to $900. Custom gates with heavy-duty hinges and latches sit at the top of that range.
How to Estimate Your Total Project Cost
Here is a quick way to estimate your fence cost before getting a formal quote:
- Measure the boundary. Walk the fence line with a measuring wheel or use your property survey plan. Most Gold Coast residential boundaries are 30 to 60 lineal metres.
- Choose your style. Paling, lapped and capped, or good neighbour.
- Multiply. Boundary length multiplied by the per-metre rate gives you a rough total.
Example: A 40-metre boundary with a lapped and capped fence at $115 per metre comes to approximately $4,600. Add a pedestrian gate at $350 and old fence removal at $20 per metre ($800), and the total is around $5,750.
This estimate does not replace a proper quote. Every property is different, and a site visit is the only way to account for terrain, access, and soil conditions.
Why Pine Is the Most Popular Fencing Timber on the Gold Coast
Treated pine is the go-to fencing timber in Queensland for good reason. It is affordable, widely available, and when treated to H4 rating, it resists rot and termite damage even in our humid climate. Hardwood fencing costs significantly more and is harder to source in standard fencing dimensions.
Pine fences typically last 15 to 20 years with minimal maintenance. A coat of timber oil or stain every few years helps, but treated pine performs well even without it.
Sharing the Cost with Your Neighbour
Under the Queensland boundary fence legislation, neighbours generally share the cost of a dividing fence equally. Before starting any work, you are required to give your neighbour written notice of the proposed fence, including the style, height, and estimated cost.
If you cannot agree, the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal (QCAT) can make an order. In practice, most Gold Coast homeowners sort it out over a conversation.
